If iphones and crackberries seem omnipresent these days, it's because they are - iPhone sales doubled last quarter. While that's great for Mac-lovers everywhere, some of us fashion enthusiasts are having a hard time accepting our way of keeping an eye on the clock has changed. Though the watch is seemingly becoming obsolete, the accessory has extended its life line by serving fun over function. For example, Dolce and Gabbana's Fall '09 collection featured chunky necklaces as an homage to the grandfather's pocket watch. Now Tom Binns has jumped on the bandwagon with his collection of faceless timepieces ranging in colors from neon to classic gold. As for what the future holds for the classic timepiece... we'll just have to watch out next season.

What You'll Need:

This project can be done in one of two ways. If you like the watch dial and link band as is, simply use a brush to paint over the face of the watch in a neat circle. Try to match the paint as closely as possible to the original metal. If you'd rather the entire watch be one color, simply spray paint the entire thing.

From the flak jacket to cargo pants, uber-cool labels such as Rag & Bone, Y-3, and Alexander Wang confirmed military inspired get-ups are back with a vengeance for spring. This masculine trend can make some feel a bit skittish, but there's something to be had for everyone. Epaulettes, favored in the most extreme form by Lady Gaga, add the perfect finishing touch to any shirt or dress. Dressed up for an evening out or down for casual Friday, this army staple infuses a bit of extra polish into any occasion. Now that's something to salute!

What You'll Need:
T-shirt
1 sheet felt
Chain
Needle nose pliers
Needle
Thread
Sewing pins

Begin by cutting two elliptical shape pieces (about the size of your shoulder) out of the felt. Next, sew the chain onto your felt pieces in a spiral pattern starting from the outside and working your way to the center.

Next, determine the placement of the epaulettes on your shirt (it helps to have the shirt on) and pin in place. Sewing around the outside edge of the felt, secure the epaulettes to the shirt. Lastly, drape some extra chain around the outside edge using your pliers.

The seemingly bleak economical and environmental outlook these days leaves people yearning for protection and security. This climate can't help but impact designers during their creative process, so it is no wonder tougher, utilitarian jewelry is making its way onto the scene. Case in point? Staple Brit label Burberry Prorsum and the recently launched Dannijo. Both lines used barbed wire as inspiration for bracelets that send a "Don't mess with me" message. Juxtaposed with dainty, ethereal dresses, these bracelets will keep you looking sharp all spring!

What You'll Need:
3 yards thin leather cord
Jewelry clasp
One bead
Superglue
Scissors

Begin by cutting two pieces of cord, each one yard long. Tie a knot at one end, then twist the two strands together and tie another knot about six inches from the opposite end. Slip on your bead then tie another knot, adding your jewelry clasp, to secure it in place. This serves as the length of the bracelet that you will wrap around your wrist.

Now it is time to make the barbs. Cut your remaining yard of leather cord into five inch pieces. While pinching the small piece of cord to the bracelet with your thumb and forefinger, wrap the loose end around itself and over the end you are pinching about three times. Leave the last loop a bit loose and slide the end of the cord under the loop, which acts as a knot to keep the barb from unwrapping.

Put a dot of superglue over the knot and snip off the excess cord. Make one barb at four inch intervals along your entire bracelet.

While one typically thinks of cording and tassels as a home decor staple, Hannah MacGibbon clearly had another use in mind for the drapery accents while designing the Chloé Fall 2009 collection. After a rocky first season as head designer for the French fashion house, MacGibbon finally struck a high note as she adorned her collection of comfy coats and khakis with demure fringe accents on clutches, blouses, and, of course, belts. Wrapped around a luxe velvet skirt, the interwoven metallic and black silk threads recall the regal days of the court of Versailles. What better way to infuse a little luxe into your everyday wardrobe?

What You'll Need:
Black velvet skirt (thrifted for $5.00)
Black and metallic cord (approximately 2 yards)
Two black tassels
Black satin ribbon (1/2" width)
Needle
Thread
Scissors

After threading your needle, stitch around the end of the cord a few times so it will not unravel. Attach one tassel to each end of the cord by sewing through the center of the tassel and knotting multiple times. Wrap the satin ribbon around the spot where the tassel meets the end of the cord and secure by sewing for a finished look. Wrap your belt around a velvet skirt for a runway ready look or add to skinny jeans or harem pants for a look all your own!

Buckle Up

The holidays are officially over, your energy is zapped, and there is nothing to look forward to in the dreary months of February and March; it's no wonder you wake up every morning and throw your hair into a lackluster bun or braid! Thank goodness Eugenia Kim, milliner to the stars, is here to save the (no good very bad hair) day with her embroidered buckle headband. Handpicked by Lucky editors as a surrealist statement piece, it's the perfect winter accessory - everyone will notice your shining hair and cute new eyeshadow instead of the same coat you've been forced to wear since November.

What You'll Need:
One piece of felt
Wide headband
Black grosgrain ribbon 2" width
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Black Sharpie

Begin by cutting the piece if felt into a wide strip. Be sure it is long enough to cover the entire headband; cut diagonally along the arrows below.

Put a dot of hot glue on one end of the headband, and press one end of the felt strip down on the glue. Make thin lines of glue along the inside edges of the headband and press the felt under. Make sure the felt is smooth along the outside surface of the headband. To create a finished look (and prevent glue from yanking out your hair!) glue the black ribbon on the inside of the headband. Cut off the excess ribbon with scissors.

Now it is time to add the trompe l'oeil buckle with a Sharpie. Near the top of the band, draw a large square covering the entire width of the headband. Draw a smaller square inside. Next, draw the long lines of the "belt" on either side of the buckle ending in a point. Go back and add details such as stitch marks and belt holes.

Learning the Ropes

Marc Jacobs has a reputation for doing some pretty off the wall designs, leaving his audience with either a "love it" or "hate it" opinion. For his resort 09 handbag collection Marc catered to the yachting crowd - quite literally - with his line of "Fluo Passementary" handbags (def. - trimming with braid or cord). Working with neon rope typically used to station a yacht or sail boat to the dock, Marc created beautifully woven works of art to add as decoration on his simple leather satchels. Whether taking a trip someplace warm or battling the brutal cold, this handbag adds the perfect pop to any outfit for the new year.

What You'll Need:
Handbag
Assorted rope (found at Home Depot)
Flat back gems
Hot glue gun
Scissors

Begin by taking your largest gauge rope and create symmetrical loops around the front center of the handbag. This takes a bit of experimentation until you come up with a design you like.

Once you know how you are going to lay out the rope, cut the proper length. Take your hot glue gun and put a dot on the end of the rope to prevent unraveling. Squeeze a thin line of glue on the bag in the shape of your design and press the rope on top. If your bag has a flap like mine, be careful to only glue on the top part of the flap. The rope has enough structure that it keep its shape and hang over the bottom. Continue gluing until your design is complete, then come in with a second (slightly thinner) rope and add to your first design. As a finishing touch, glue a few colorful gems in the center of your loops.

To finish the handbag, tie a long piece of rope around the end of one side of the handle. Begin tying the rope in basic alternating knots, as you would if you were braiding a flat hemp necklace. When you reach the other side of the handle, put a dot of hot glue on each side of loose rope. Once dry (approximately one minute), snip the excess rope off as close to the knot as possible.

In an effort to be all inclusive and politically correct, Bloomingdale's theme this season is "Happy Merry Peace Love Holiday." While my personal aesthetic leans more toward Barney's Taste.Luxury.Humor (how awesome are the SNL windows!?) I decided to fully embrace the vision of my place of employment and go all out for the company bake-off. I adapted a red velvet peppermint cake recipe from Southern Living to incorporate our quirky holiday colors. The cake is lined with simple sugar cookie shopping bags adorned with our signature lowercase b. Once the pristine white frosting is sliced, a swirl of neon pink and lime green cake awaits inside to be devoured!

Ingredients:

1 (18.25-ounce) package white cake mix
3 egg whites
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 (9-ounce) package yellow cake mix
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons liquid red food coloring
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
*Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 (2-pound) package powdered sugar 2 teaspoons peppermint extract

Preparation:

Beat first 4 ingredients according to cake mix package directions.

Beat yellow cake mix and next 6 ingredients according to package directions. Spoon red batter alternately with white batter into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round cakepans. Swirl batter gently with a knife.

Bake at 350° for 22 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes. Remove from pans; cool on wire racks.

For Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting:

Beat cream cheese and butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating at low speed until smooth. Add extract, beating until blended.

Spread Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting between layers and on top and sides of cake. (Cake may be chilled up to 2 days or frozen up to 1 month.) Garnish, if desired. Serve within 2 hours.

Call it the Michael Jackson effect. Since the entertainer's passing last summer jazz shoes have been seen adorning the feet of everyone from It-Brit Alexa Chung to Belgian model Anouck Lepère. Typically in black patent leather or the occasional metallic, they complement every look from cropped skinny pants to baby-doll dresses. For those who tend to lean toward the New York uniform of all black as a fall back option when pressed for time or creativity, there is no better shoe to add interest to an otherwise safe outfit than Christian Louboutin's Fred glitter lace-up shoes. With the amount of complements you'll receive, you'll be toe-tapping and moonwalking your way to the top of all your peers' best dressed lists.

What You'll Need:
One pair white sneakers
Black Sharpie
Glitter & gem glue
Small paint brush
Silver glitter
2 yards leather cord
Mod Podge® or other glitter sealant

First, remove the shoe laces. Color around the edges and stitched detailing of the shoes with a Sharpie. Don't worry about making the lines perfect; in fact, it is better to color a bit outside the lines as well.

Now, cover your work area with newspaper (and keep a vacuum handy for clean up). Begin painting glue on the white canvas of the shoe, one section at a time. Be sure you are covering all the canvas right up to the black edges. Pour glitter on the glue covered part of the shoe, then shake off the excess. Repeat until the entire shoe is covered in glitter. Allow to dry overnight. Dab on a glitter sealant to prevent the sparkles from falling off (however, I still wouldn't recommend wearing the shoes around your house!). For the finishing touch, lace up the shoes with a leather cord.

Begin by trying on your tank and lightly penciling a diagonal line from under your rib cage to your hip. Lie the tank on a flat surface and cut along your guide. Next, sew the bugle beads around the entire hem of the shirt using the matching thread.

Using your complementary thread color, sew loops around the middle of each individual bugle bead. This adds the ruffle effect along the hem. The thread will pop against the silver beads to add unexpected color to an otherwise soft and subtle top!

I've been DIYING (pun intended) for the perfect shade of nail polish since I saw pops of green all over the classic black and white Chanel runway last spring.

After numerous (failed) attempts at concocting my own varnish, I decided it was time to give up hope.

Assorted flat back jewels
Fabric glue

Lay your sweatshirt on a flat surface. Insert a magazine/book/dvd case in between the front and back layer of fabric so glue won't seep through. Arrange your crystals in a diagonal line from the collar to the armpit on both sides.

Once you are happy with the positioning, place a dot of glue on the back of each jewel and press firmly. Allow to dry at least an hour, but preferably overnight.

With temperatures dropping and sidewalks getting slicker the standard BFs (ballet flats, duh!) just aren't cutting it anymore. The thought of donning UGGs in public is more horrifying than J. Lo's AMA performance. This winter there is a new way to keep your toes toasty with embellished oxfords thanks to the girls of Vena Cava. The duo's fall collection, aptly titled "Crystalarium," takes the old English staple into the digital age with added studs and industrial size chain along the back heel. Tires need a little chain to make it through the harsh winter, so why not your shoes!

What You'll Need:
One pair loafers or oxfords
Thread
Thimble
Industrial size needle
Industrial size chain
Scissors
Pliers

Start by making two even pieces of chain (approximately 7 inches long each), using your pliers to open and close the links. Then double thread your needle, tying a secure knot at the end. Using your thimble to protect your thumb, stick your needle through the back center of the shoe from the inside out.

Loop the thread through the center link of the chain and push the needle back inside the shoe. Repeat, making sure the chain is secure. To tie the thread off push your needle to the outside once again. Loop the thread around itself (the part already holding the link in place) to make a few ending knots. Thread the chain to the shoe at the two ends of the chain, and on either side of the center. This ensures the chain runs straight across the back of the shoe and does not droop.

Parson's alum Eugenia Kim hasn't stopped making hats since suffering a bad haircut and being forced to shave her head. Suffer in vain she did not! Her newsboy caps were quickly all over the red carpet on the precocious heads of young Hollywood a few years ago, but now the young designer has solidified her status as the hat guru with fedoras, berets, and even headbands. Newsboy caps haven't looked this good since crowning the head of a barely legal Christian Bale in the 1992 film Newsies.

What You'll Need:
Black hat
Gold chain
Thin black ribbon
Needle
Thread
Scissors

First, braid two strands of chain and one strand of ribbon. Make sure the braid is long enough to lie across the entire front brim of the hat. Thread your needle and sew the ribbon part of your braid to the hat. Be sure the braid lies flat and you are only stitching on the underside.

Once you have sewn the entire braid, snip off any loose ends. Although the hat isn't entirely similar to Eugenia Kim's, it would fit in quite nicely with Chanel's Fall 2004 collection, used liberally in The Devil Wears Prada.

Take It to the Lim-it!

Walk into any department store this holiday season and you'll see bling is back in a big way. If blinding sequin garments are a bit over the top for your style or you don't have the dough to drop on legitimate ice, you may want to consider a more practical, yet totally unique option - Phillip Lim's accordian pleated necklace. This version is a spin-off from the one that opened his runway show. Decked out with colorful jewels, this necklace combines the best of two trends with the tough gold metal chain, an ode to biker chic. Throw on over a simple dress or plain top to add character to any ensemble. Dressing for holiday soirees or office parties couldn't be easier this season. Gem dandy!

What You'll Need:
Black grosgrain ribbon (approximately 2 inches wide)
Black tulle ribbon
Chain
Gems (assorted colors and sizes)
Two metal loops
Needle
Thread
Scissors
Iron
Hot glue gun

First turn the iron on and spread out the grosgrain ribbon. Thread your needle to have it handy. Leave about 5 inches of ribbon at the end, then use your fingers to fold the ribbon into half inch pleats and press firmly with the hot iron. It works best to fold about three to five pleats at a time. Make a row of tiny stitches across the top of the pleated ribbon to hold it in place. Continue working your way down the ribbon in this manner until you reach your desired length. The ends of the ribbon should lay on either side of your neck, leaving room across the back for the tulle ribbon.

Lay the pleated ribbon flat. Using the needle and thread, sew the chain down across the top of the pleated part of the necklace. Next, slip one of the loops through the end of the ribbon. Fold the ribbon around the loop and sew flat. Repeat for opposite side. Attach the tulle ribbon in the same manner on the other side of the loop. Finally, hot glue the colored gems on the front of the necklace just below the chain.

Third Time's the Charm

Luella Bartley may have been watching too much "Mad Men" while designing her Spring 2010 collection, but we love her for it! Dainty skirts and blouses under mod swing coats in candy bright colors were a welcome departure from the current climate. Luella's ladies were adorably buttoned up and all ready to attend 60's church service. Not sure how to infuse such optimistic dressing into your biker chic wardrobe? Take one of these fun floral key chains that adorned all the purses in Luella's show for a spin.

What You'll Need:
1.5" Styrofoam balls
Silk and wire stem flowers
Jump rings
Eye pins
Chain
Lobster clasps
Paint
Pliers

Depending on the color of your flowers, paint the Styrofoam balls to match. Even though they will be covered with flowers it hides any larger gaps from the naked eye.

After the paint has dried begin inserting the wire stems into the Styrofoam. Space the flowers so the petals are touching. Once the ball is covered, insert one eye pin into the Styrofoam.

Using pliers, connect a jump ring to the eye loop sticking out of the Styrofoam. Then attach about 4 inches of chain and another jump ring at the end. Finish off the key chain with a lobster clasp for easy attachment to purses, keys, belts, and other accessories!

Black Dress and the Cherry Tree

Inspired by Japanese photography, Oscar de la Renta alum Adam Lippes interpreted far eastern culture into western fashion at its best for his eponymous label's fall collection. From swirling full length skirts reminiscent of kimonos to sequins galore on regalia befitting a samurai warrior, Lippes left naught for want for the modern jet-setting bohemian. Among the superior sportswear pieces were silk dresses and draping tops embellished with delicate cherry blossom branches. The Orient is having a big moment in fashion right now, but better don this LBD for the holiday season because just like the cherry blossoms, trends bloom and die in the blink of an eye.

What You'll Need:
Little black dress (preferably cotton)
Silver beads
Black thread
Red thread
Needle
Scissors

First, make the branches off which you'll sew the cherry blossoms. It is helpful to lightly sketch an outline of the branches in pencil on the fabric. Knot a long strand of black thread through your needle and come up from the underside of the dress. Thread one silver bead on your needle, then go through the fabric and back up again, securing the bead. Continue threading the beads in a row, being sure to loop through the fabric each time.

Once the branches are complete, thread your needle with red string. Begin at the bottom corner of the dress and begin scattering leaves and blossoms up the branch. To sew a petal, bring your needle up through the fabric right next to the branch. Make a stitch (approximately 2 inches long) with the thread and come back through the fabric right next to where you began. About 5 to 7 stitches like this will create a petal. See the diagram below for a simplistic version of how the thread should be sewn. The center stitch should be the longest, with stitches decreasing in length on either side.

To make an entire blossom, simply sew five petals in a circle, creating a "star" shape. Add petals all over the branches, or just at the ends for a bare look.

Lumberjacks are not known for their sense of style, but thanks to a unique collaboration between Pendleton Woolen Mills and hip shop Opening Ceremony they're slowly finding their way out of the woods and onto the runway. To celebrate its 100th anniversary Pendleton lent its classic plaid and Native American print wools to OC for a line of updated button downs, mini-skirts, and blazers. Whether hitting the trail or heading to the metro, the classic flare coat is sure to make you stand out and keep warm this winter.

What You'll Need:
3 yards Native American print wool
Coat Pattern

This was my first ever sewing machine DIY, so I'm not going to be much help in explaining any steps.

The chaos mid-project

I'm assuming if you own a sewing machine you are aware of its virtues and know how to use it. Pick out a coat pattern that resembles the OC coat in your size. *Warning* Measure yourself! Sewing pattern sizes run differently. I was able to find many similar patterns at my local fabric store. I ended up using one that was a wee bit long, so I shortened the hem line and the sleeves for a 3/4 length effect.

Next, pick out the fabric. My fabric was the inspiration behind this entire project. For years I would walk through Jo Ann's or Hancock Fabrics staring at the hideous felt and wool bolts. I wondered who on earth bought it and why there was always so much of it in stock. When I saw Pendleton's collab with OC, it reminded me of said fabric and I had my light bulb moment. I guarantee if you head to your local fabric store you will find a perfect match hidden beneath the High School Musical and Peter Rabbit prints. Lastly, take your pattern and fabric home and follow the instructions. Happy sewing!

Buy The Book

One of the oldest pastimes for young women is stitching. In colonial days girls were taught to perfect their needlepoint by completing samplers displaying practical sayings. Over centuries the craft became popular with grannies the world over.

One Christmas I got a bee in my bonnet to make hand stitched stockings for my family. This does not say much for my middle school social life, but had I been born back in the 1700s you can bet I would have been married off by the time I was thirteen thanks to my ambitious needlepoint skills.

While the hobby may have stuck around through changing times, unfortunately the patterns have not evolved as drastically. Unless there is a baby on the way or you are in need of a floral pillow, you are not going to find much in the way of variety. After the "Great Stocking Project of '99" I abandoned the activity and moved on to chicer pursuits. However, a few weeks ago I was thrilled to run across a new handbag line of intricately stitched clutches based on classic book covers by Olympia Le-Tan. She scoured dozens of vintage book stores before finally settling on a smattering of influential reads such as Moby Dick, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and The Catcher in the Rye. Each clutch is lined with Liberty-print fabric also used in Le-Tan's shoe line at Colette.

The Bee's Knees

Designers must have held a covert brainstorming session this season because embellished tights trotted down runways across the world. From Doo.Ri in New York to Ungaro in Paris and finally Miu Miu in Milan, no accessory complimented winter footwear better than luxurious and blinding stockings. Completing outfits such as Cher Horowitz's yellow plaid skirt suit and Blair Waldorf's take on the classic school uniform, knee highs have never strayed far from the spotlight. Miu Miu got it just right this season with paillette-covered kneesocks that take any old outfit from drab to fab in a flash!

What You'll Need:
Knee socks
Sequins
Seed beads
Scissors
Needle
Thread

First, put your socks on. This ensures the tension of the thread is correct and it will not break when you put them on to wear. Thread your needle and tie a double knot at the end. From the underside of the stockings, stick your needle through and pull. Knot a few more time through the stockings to secure. Start by making three "flowers." Thread a sequin and a bead onto the thread. Go back through the sequin with your thread, and through the socks. You have secured the first sequin!

I found it easiest to poke my needle into the stockings, then come right back up in the next spot for a sequin in one motion so you do not stab yourself! To make a flower start with the center sequin, then attach the "branches" in a circle around the center. Add the ending "petals" last. To tie off the thread, simply tie a double knot around the underside of a sequin. Make three (or more) separate flowers down the length of the sock.

Next, add random sequins down the entire front of the socks. Keep the sequins concentrated on the front top half of the sock, then place them more sporadically as you move down and outward.

Girls stomped down the straw strewn runway in pinafores and poppy prints toting basket woven bags. Oh Karl, you know I love to be reminded of my childhood road trips through Tennessee and Kentucky! What better way to provoke memories of the waitresses at Cracker Barrel and dudes fillin' their pick ups at the Texaco than by putting a classy spin on the tattoo as only the Kaiser can do. Serving as mock garters and wrap around bracelets in classic chain and pearl prints, this just might be the push I need to get in touch with my inner rebel come spring. Now, time to start searching for an all inclusive henna kit ...

Ms. Brightside

Imagine starting your own jewelry business and in under a year your pieces are featured on "Gossip Girl," beloved by Natalie Portman, and carried in stores such as Henri Bendel and Harvey Nichols. For sisters Danielle and Jodi Snyder this is their reality. The Florida natives felt they could capture the polarity between "rough and edgy" and "soft, feminine and dainty" to fill a need that just wasn't being met by other jewelry designers. With this concept and a little manipulation of their names, Dannijo was born. Favoring neon colors, heaps of delicate chains, and interesting textures like yarn, the line has a decidedly tribal feel sure to brighten any ensemble.

What You'll Need:
Rubber tubing (I used an old stethoscope)
Strip of tie dye felt or fabric
2 yards suede or hemp string
2 yards chain
Beads (optional)
Copper wire
Necklace clasp
Super glue
Pliers

First, cut your rubber tubing to the appropriate length. The tubing should circle in front of your neck ending at just about your shoulders. Next, lay the piece of felt face down. Spread a line of super glue across one edge and place the tubing on top. Be sure to bend the tubing as straight as possible and hold in place for approximately 30 to 60 seconds. Continue coating the felt with glue and twist around the tube in sections, making sure the felt is pulled taut. When the entire tube is covered, cut the excess felt off in a straight line and glue the edge down.

There should be some extra felt on either end of the tube. Pinch it together and tightly wrap wire around the end of the tube, similar to how many pieces of candy are wrapped. Next, take a 4 inch piece of wire and insert it into the middle of the pinched fabric, pushing it down into the tubing. Put a few drops of glue where the wire enters the fabric to ensure it doesn't slide out. Using your needle nose pliers, make a loop out of the remaining wire sticking out. This is where you will attach your chain. Repeat for other side.

Next, you need to attach your tubing to a chain that will go around your neck. If you already have some heavy duty chain that will work well and yield a similar result to the original. I made a beaded chain using this wire wrapped loop technique. Measure around your neck to determine where your necklace hits and how much chain you'll need. Cut the proper length, then cut that chain piece in half. Attach your necklace closure at one end of each chain and attach the other ends to the wire loops on the felt tube at either side.

Lastly, tie a piece of suede string on a wire loop near the clasp. Twist it all the way around the necklace, and tie it off near the clasp on the other side.

Repeat, twisting the opposite way around the necklace to form X's out of the suede. Repeat using two pieces of chain.

What You'll Need:
Black skirt
Mirror mosaic tiles
Fabric glue

Line up your first tile in the bottom left corner of the skirt, just above the seam. Glue to the skirt by rubbing some fabric glu directly on the material and pressing the tile on top [Note: If you can find mosaic tile with sewing holes on either side, I recommend sewing them instead] .

Next, work your way out from the bottom by gluing pieces above and to the right. Continue adding on until you covered as much of the skirt as you like.

The pages of Vogue, ELLE, and other fashion publications have screamed with headlines proclaiming the heavy metal look as hot hot hot with titles such as "Iron Maiden," "Rock Revival," and " What a Stud" over the past year. Everyone and their brother in the design world is capitalizing on the craze that swept the DIY blogging world by storm. Case in point (from left to right): Downtown kid Alexander Wang's grommet detailed sweatshirt, Matthew Williamson for H & M's grommet studded vest, and It-Brit (and animal friendly) Stella McCartney's silk grommet dress.

Just when you thought you'd scream if you saw one more editorial or blog post featuring biker chic wears (I may be a wee guilty on the latter point), Marc reinvents the wheel. For his Spring 2010 Marc by Marc Jacobs show he pairs heavy metal purses with tribal print clothes in vibrant oranges, yellows, purples, and blues. The resulting look is quite a departure from the tired neutral hues found on most rocker garbs. His collection is the refreshing oasis we all needed to liven up the rather barren season thus far.

Neat As A Pin

All the cool kids live in Brooklyn these days, including Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai, collectively known as Vena Cava. A wardrobe staple of Blake Lively's Gossip Girl character, the line is most recognized for its sexy party dresses and ornamental necklines. Although the two showed a more subdued collection for Spring 2010, they couldn't help but adding a little Williamsburg flavor to their collection with a safety-pin camisole. Their effort to make "wearable day pieces" certainly succeeded. Thrown over a basic tee or jersey dress, this makeshift suit of armor also comes in handy when your pants button pops or you need to pick a lock... which is far more frequently these days given the economy. Hey, I'm just saying.

What You'll Need:
Large safety-pins
Jump rings
Pliers

First make the bodice piece by connecting the safety-pins in a horizontal row long enough to fit loosely around your chest. Use the pliers to attach the jump rings through the top loops of the safety-pins and the bottom loops. Repeat for two more rows. Now use the jump rings to attach the three rows together. This allows the vest to lay flat, whereas if you actually pin them together it will get twisted. Finally, connect a row of pins for your straps and adjust the length.

The best ideas seem to be born out of dorm rooms these days. Following in the footsteps of companies like Dell, facebook, and Google, sisters Katheryn and Elizabeth Fortunato started Lizzie Fortunato jewels while they were students at Duke University. After graduation, the two took their campus curios to the Big Apple where they launched their namesake line in 2007. In addition to putting out her own line every season, Elizabeth also manages to design the jewelry for Victoria Bartlett's VPL runway show. For fall the sisters were inspired by their roadtrip through the American West and aptly titled the collection "Long May You Run." Using stones reminiscent of the canyons and elegantly braided silk thread, these bracelets will certainly have a long run in your winter wardrobe.

What You'll Need:
Embroidery floss

There are many different ways these bracelets can be made. First I must note that instead of thick gold chain I decided to use strands of small gold beads that have been sitting in my jewelry box forever. For the longest part of the bracelet simply braid together the chain and/or embroidery floss. Finish off both ends of the braid by knotting it onto a wire-wrapped loop (click here for simple instructions on how to make a wire-wrapped loop). String your beads onto the wire, then finish off with another loop. Attach the chain and bracelet closures, then add any extra braids or dangling charms.

I went camping last weekend for the first time in I don't know how many years. While laying in my tent, a symphony of crickets and critters serenaded me to sleep (READ: kept me awake and huddled in a corner away from tent walls). I started to think about my childhood summers spent in the mountains of North Carolina at sleep away camp. Aside from the lack of edible food, no air conditioning, 30 second timed ice cold shower thus being forced to shave my legs on my bed, rock sliding and ending up with scabs all over my bum it was generally a great time! Let's just say I'm an indoor girl. When I stumbled across this Larsen Gray shoulder vest dress, though, I was flooded with memories of whiling away the stifling hours making friendship bracelets in the rec room with my pals. The eco-friendly line comes from Pratt alums Nora Caliguri (the girl who made a dress out of a plastic blue lawn chair on season 1 of Project Runway) and her partner Rachelyn Porter. Made from organic fabric and a can-do attitude, Camp Cheerio would have to approve this DIY activity!

Thank Serena van der Woodsen for single-handedly bringing back the "bobo" - bohemian bourgeois - trend so finely crafted by the twins (you know which ones) circa 2004. This time around, cowboy boots and status handbags have been replaced by chunky necklaces, deconstructed tees, and... fringe. As an update to the flapper staple, Chelsea Flower has created a beaded version to achieve a Native American affect. The result? The perfect piece to wear during your daily routine of picking up bio fair trade groceries and aligning you chakras.

What You'll Need:
Vest (found at TJ Maxx)
Seed Beads
Needle

Scissors

First decide the color pattern for your seed beads. Next, thread your needle and knot the end. Starting from the inside of the vest, poke your needle through closest to the vertical edge seam. String your beads. Loop the thread back through the beads again from the bottom, but skip the bottom-most bead. This secures the string.

Push the needle and thread back through the vest where you came from the underneath. About 1/2" to the side, bring your needle back up. Bead another fringe string and repeat. repeat. repeat...

If you thought neons were for preschoolers (c'mon we all thought LA Lights were the bomb), think again! It is time to make like a highlight kid and sport the trend once again. From über cool Alex Wang to established labels such as Marc Jacobs and DKNY, there is no doubt some of the hottest jewelers got their inspiration straight from the runway. If you feel just a tad ostentatious sporting screaming yellow around your neck, you needn't fret. Even Michelle Obama was spotted wearing one of Tom Binn's creations to an event at the Kennedy Center.

I had a whole box full of plastic string leftover from the summer I was going to make a fortune selling lanyards to all my elementary school buds, so I thought the neon shade would be perfect for recreating the feel of Mr. Binn's masterpiece. Start by making four 1.5" circle stitch lanyards. Next attach them together with chain by using pliers to slide the chain links under the side stitches of the lanyard. Drape loops of chain in varying lengths off the bottom chain (again using pliers to open and close the links). On each pin back, loop the ribbon through and superglue it flat on the back side. Attach the necklace links through the pin backs. Tie around your neck and adjust the bow until it hits at your desired length.

Take A Bow

Summer is KNOT over yet, so take advantage of the warm weather in these ribbon knotted Lanvin sandals! Alber Elbaz certainly had sunshine in mind when designing his colorful Resort 2010 collection inspired by Acapulco, Mexico. Vibrant shades of azure, lime, and watermelon accent beautifully draped black ensembles. The standout pieces, however, are the fully fluffed out shoes! From rafia pom-poms to metallic high-tops, Mr. Elbaz's accessories are designed with the social butterfly (and her hectic schedule) in mind. These shoes were made for party hopping - er walking!

What You'll Need:
T-strap sandals (found at Target)
Two shade of grosgrain ribbon
Four large pearl beads
One packet of small crystals
Prong back settings (available at most craft stores)
Needle
Thread
Pliers
Scissors

First, tie six pieces of ribbon (double knotted) up the front strap of your sandal. Clip the ribbon off at an angle and fray the ends with the edge of your scissors. To attach the pearls thread your needle and double knot the end. Thread through the center of the ribbon knot from the underside. Slide the pearl onto the thread. Push the needle back through the ribbon close to where you made the first stitch. Repeat one more loop to secure, then tie off the thread underneath the grosgrain ribbon.

Finally it is time to add a little bling to the bows. Push a prong back setting through the underside of the ribbon so you can see the prongs poking through. Set the crystal in the middle. Use the pliers to bend the prongs to hold the crystal tightly in place. Repeat for however many crystals you want. I clustered mine around the pearls with a few spaced in between.

Hear No Evil...

There is no disputing that Barbie has had a major influence on high fashion. She celebrated her 50th birthday last fashion week with a blow-out runway show featuring designs from the likes of Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, and of course Bob Mackie. Apart from the impact her distorted proportions have had on society, she is an iconic symbol of youth and beauty. Thanks to artist, Margaux Lange, the plastic princess "has become the accessory instead of being accessorized." Exploring the darker side of the bubblegum pop phenom, Margaux uses every imaginable doll part to create handcrafted jewelry available for sale on her website. However, if you have some old dolls lying around the house, you can easily put your own spin on these "hear-rings!"

What You'll Need:
Doll head
X-acto knife
Eye pins
Earring hooks or posts
Superglue
Crystals (the size of the ear)
Boondoggle thread (aka plastic lanyard)
Assorted beads
Pliers
Needle

The first step is not for the faint of heart. You'll need to take your X-acto knife and cut the plastic ears out of your doll's head in a large square shape. Then, squeeze some superglue onto the back of your square crystal and adhere it to the back off the plastic ear. This gives the earring a finished look should it twist around while you wear it. Next cut off the excess plastic around the crystal with the X-acto knife.

Take your plastic lanyard and superglue it around the four side of the square. Make sure the plastic overlaps at one corner and trim off the excess. Next, attach your earring hook or post to the loop on the eye pin using pliers. String the beads onto your eye pin in the desired pattern. Take the needle and poke it vertically into the top center of the ear square, where the eye pin with enter. This gets the hole started so it will not be as difficult to poke the eye pin through.

Finally, gently (but with force) ease the eye pin into the hole until it is about half way into the square. At this point you should be able to hold the earring upright without the beads falling off. Dab some superglue where the eye pin sits in the plastic ear to secure the post.

From a distance these look like any other beaded earring, but up close people get a macabre surprise!

Safety First

No one does ironic jewelry quite like the notably candid Tom Binns. He has a penchant for taking fine "diamonds, emeralds, and shit" and dimming them down with sterling silver skulls and everyday objects such as laminated plastic. Take for instance his Rythym of Cruelty necklace. A pair of preppy pearls turn punk with the addition of a few safety pin closures. A veritable fountain of DIY inspiration, Mr. Binns also debuted a collection entitled "Get Real" at Colette in which he took magazine clippings of fine jewelry and laminated them to create wearable pieces. In a time when it's considered uncouth to flaunt one's wealth, Mr. Binns has come up with the perfect solution for the recessionista!

What You'll Need:
Safety pins
Pearl beads
Seed beads (optional)
Beading string
Two jump rings
Scissors
Pliers
Superglue

Seeing as how I just made a necklace, I decided to make a bracelet version on this go-round. Start by linking together three safety pins. Using the pliers, attach the two jump rings on either end of the chain of pins. Measure your beading string around your wrist (or neck), leaving ample room on each end. Double/triple knot the beading string to one of the jump rings. Put a dot of superglue on the knot (to ensure it won't come undone) and snip off the tail. String the pearls and beads together for the length of your bracelet. Knot, glue, and snip the second end!

If you have an overflow of safety pins and a bit more time on your hands, be sure to try his pin and pearl necklace.

Colors of the Wind

With the Native American trend infiltrating almost every piece of your wardrobe, from ikat skirts to fringe moccasins, what better way to differentiate from the fad than with Lee Angel's beaded collar necklace? The delicate bead work juxtaposed against a tough metal chain keeps the antique piece looking decidedly New World. Pair it with a maxi dress to feel like an Indian princess or leather pants and a jean jacket for a show-em-who's-chief vibe. There couldn't be a better piece to tie you over during those late night summer pow-wows.

What You'll Need:
Chain link necklace
Approximately 1 yard embroidery floss
Assorted seed beads
Head pins or jewelry wire
Scissors
Flat nose pliers
Superglue

Spread your necklace in one row, making sure all the links are flat and facing the same direction. Take the embroidery floss and tie a double knot at one end of the necklace; snip off the knot tails. Put a dot of superglue on the knot to hold the floss in place. Begin looping the floss around the top of the chain, pulling tightly. After about three loops around the first link, move on to the next. When you reach the end, tie another knot and dot with glue. I found that weaving the floss through the chain first helps hold the links in place while you attach the beaded pins.

If you have head pins, which have a metal stop on one end to keep the beads from falling off, begin stringing your seed beads on in whatever pattern you choose. If you are using wire like moi (because I had it handy and didn't want to waste money), take the flat nose pliers and coil the wire tightly around them a few times to create a stop on one end. Depending on how full you want your necklace to look, make between 40 to 80 beaded pins. I believe mine has near 70. Don't feel daunted, the beading goes quite fast! Finally, attach the beaded pins by coiling the long end tightly around the bottom of each link. Snip off the extra wire, and use the pliers to flatten the sharp end of the coil down.

Fits Like A Glove

Rock revival is a common theme on the runways, most recently seen in shows from Nina Ricci to Burberry. However, achieving the rocker look doesn't have to be all about shredded concert tees and metal accents. With the tragic death of Michael Jackson dominating the headlines as of late, what better way to pay tribute to the King of Pop than channeling his signature one glove look with Alexander McQueen's Faithful Leather Glove Clutch.

What You'll Need:
Large flap clutch
Fingerless glove (can be cut)
Snap button
Needle
Thread

First, sew one side of the snap button on the palm of the glove. Center the glove on the clutch for placement. It should rest just over the flap enclosure where you comfortably hold the bag. Make a mark where the snap meets the bag, then sew the other side of the snap button to the clutch. Now you have a removable glove built into your bag! This will come in handy if you unexpectedly find yourself in a street race or if, like me, your appendages are always abnormally cold.

Planting (Bead) Seeds

Who would have thought when the gladiator craze hit three years ago that it would still be growing strong in '09? With a fresh take on what is fast becoming a summer classic, Antik Batik has upped the ante by adding a bold pop of color and texture. Rejuvinate last season's It sandals sitting in your closet for round two simply by adding some seed beads. The candy colored shades punch up neutrals and liven basic blacks, which make accessorizing for a hot day easy breezy!

What You'll Need:
Gladiator sandals
Seed beads (variety of colors)
Superglue
Sharpie

Take your sharpie and section your sandal straps where the different color beads will meet. You may want to note which color goes where so you don't wind up getting too much of one color in a certain area (if you have OCD like me). Covering only one color section at a time, spread a thin layer of super glue over the sandal strap and pour the seed beads onto the wet glue.

Shake off the excess beads. To make sure the beads are secure spread another layer of either superglue or clear nail polish over the top. Using all your colors, make a circular pattern up the middle sandal strap then haphazardly drop beads around it. I impulsively grabbed these chunkier gladiators on a grocery excursion to Walmart, but I think the design is better suited on sandals with lots of thin straps.

What You'll Need:
Sunglasses
Charm
Acrylic paint
Toothpicks
Hot glue gun

Start by wiping the lenses of your sunglasses and removing all fingerprints for a clean surface. Dip the sharp end of a toothpick in the paint and lightly dot your design on the edge of the frame. Acrylic paint wipes off easily, so don't worry if you mess up on the first few tries! I found that dotting the web and lightly blending the dots together gives you the thinnest line.

Take the clean end of a toothpick and gently wipe away any flaws from bleeding paint. After the paint is dry, hot glue your charm to the corner of the frame. If you have arachnophobia, try a sea creature charm and paint blue waves, or a dog charm with painted paw prints...the possibilities are endless!

Anchors Away

The nautical theme is everywhere these days, from the always iconic Michael Kors to D&G's latest French Riviera inspired collection; however, Phillip Lim beat them all to the punch this season. He crafted up an exclusive little tee for Brooklyn hot shop Bird last December, touting the piece as adding "some major sparkle to your holidays." While the blinding gems certainly make you feel giddy with Christmas cheer, the winding rope helps the piece transition between seasons (perfect for the lazy days of summer lurking around the corner!). Throw this versatile piece over your swim suit for a day at the beach or pair with smart trousers for cocktails and cookouts.

What You'll Need:
Rope (about 3 yards)
Pack of large crystals (with holes for sewing)
T-shirt
Needle
Thread
Scissors

Start by arranging the crystals around the neckline in the general pattern you desire. Remember to leave enough room between the crystals for the rope to loop around.

Next, sew the crystals to the shirt with a needle and thread. Do not stretch the shirt when sewing, but let the fabric fall naturally. This will help you avoid puckering. Once all the crystals are secure, snake the rope around them tying loose knots. I folded my rope in half and started at the center of the shirt, working my way out on both sides. Secure the rope with thread by sewing from the underside of the shirt.

Once the rope is tied around all the crystals, sew it completely around the neckline to the back of the shirt. The two ends of the rope should meet at the nape of your neck. Tie some thread around both ends (so the rope won't unravel) and snip off the excess. I then added a spiral for a more finished look, or you can experiment with other ways to tie off the rope. Check out the original.

Now you have your very own nautical knit. Let the fun in the sun commence!

Paper Chains

Who would've thought your status as the #1 construction-paper-chain-maker in kindergarten would come in handy after the age of seven? Lo and behold, the elementary craft project gets a haute redo thanks to Louis Vuitton's fall runway. Monsieur Marc off-set his delicate black lace ensembles with chunky necklaces in shades from hot pink and purple to gold metallic that can easily be recreated on a shoe string budget.

What You'll Need:
Pleather ribbon
Tulle ribbon
Scissors
Hot glue
Ruler

Start by cutting your pleather ribbon into 4 inch strips. Curve into a ring and secure the ends together with hot glue. Make the chain long enough to cover the front of your neck; you could make either a choker or a extra-long necklace. Once the chain is the length you desire, tie a piece of tulle ribbon on both ends. Secure the necklace around the back of your neck with a burgeoning bow!

Every season make-up trends seem to alternate between playing up either bold lips or dramatic eyes, but recently we're seeing an emphasis on a new facial feature. Red glitter hearts and lips adorned tulle covered cheeks at the Comme des Garçons fall runway show, while Chanel Iman was looking particularly whimsical with glitter stars on her angelic angles in a recent spread for Lula magazine. And you thought you would never have a use for all those Sandylion foil star stickers you stocked up on in grade school!

As cliche as it may be to apologize for a blogging absence, I'm terribly sorry. Midterms, job #1, and job#2 have prohibited me from having any type of social life, let alone time for arts and crafts! I wish I could tell you I have lots of new project ideas post-NY Fashion Week, but unfortunately I don't. I haven't had time to go through the shows in detail because it has been consumed with some other projects. Luckily, you guys can see one of them now!

Whenever a designer creates a capsule collection for a discount retail chain there is always tons of buzz surrounding the launch. While fashionistas across Manhattan will be making their way to Target's pop-up store to score some Alexander McQueen this weekend, I'm more looking forward to Matthew Williamson's H&M collection...for men! Studded jackets, comfy and colorful zip-up hoodies, and his signature rainbow stripes dominate.

Balmain Bonanza

Perusing Net-A-Porter.com the other day, I fell in love with what I thought was a studded Balmain blazer. Not that I had the extra $5,000 lying around, but I wondered why a blazer - albeit Balmain - was several thousand dollars? A closer glance and some research turned up the blazer's counterpart. This was actually a jacket constructed out of what appeared to be the smoothest, softest leather I'd ever seen on a pixelated screen. Don't get me wrong, the leather is gorgeous, but I actually liked the notion that this leather jacket had been masquerading as a neat little blazer punked out with studs. The rock-n-roll vibe is a bit more ironic on a stereotypical workplace item. With studs popping up everywhere these days, I thought the trend had just about overstayed its welcome. However, there's no one quite like Christophe to transform tacky bling and cliché 80s silhouettes into something fabulous.

What You'll Need:
Blazer
Black or silver studs (about 150 medium sized)
Seam ripper
Pliers

Studs seem to be all over the blogging world, so I don't want to be too redundant by explaining the process again. See this bag and these shoes for a detailed lesson. The design on this blazer entails three rows of studs covering the entire lapel and wrapping all the way around the back of the neck. Make the row closest to the inside of the blazer about four extra studs longer than the second row.
The second row will be three-four studs longer than the third row (and so on). If your jacket has a wider lapel, keep adding rows until you hit the outside edge.

Throw on with cigarette pants and structural heels for that avate-garde Parisian feel or over a silk dress for a night out on the town.

NOT! Only a select group of hipsters and fashion savvy internationals find their faces appearing on infamous party blog The Cobra Snake, but thanks to a hot iron transfer and a little inspiration via Face Hunter you too can pronounce your new found celebrity to the world!

What You'll Need:
T-shirt
Hot iron
Iron on transfer kit (found at most craft stores, next to glitter glue and kitty stencils)
Your favorite photo
Computer
Printer

Take the following graphic and open it in Paint, Photoshop, or other picture editing software. I'm basically inept at all things technological, so simple old Paint works for me!

Take the personal picture you want on your shirt, and paste it over the graphic. You can also edit the text to say whatever you wish at this point. A Henry Holland-esque phrase may be appropriate. My clever friend Elana recently came up with

Just so long as it rhymes with your name, you're good to go! Print your image on the transfer paper and follow the ironing instructions included in your kit.

Tulle-ing Around

In signature Vera fashion, Ms. Wang's spring collection was chock-full of gauzy fabrics and flirty frocks. However, Vera threw the fashion world a curve ball this season by incorporating sporty cigarette pants and basketball tanks in with her trademark romantic pieces. Not being one to jump on the über girly trend, I usually find pleasure viewing Vera's collections from a distance. However, after stumbling across this editorial in Vogue Brazil, I was smitten with the jeweled necklaces styled over casual tee shirts.

Already having more tulip skirts than I can count hanging in my closet, the wheels of my fashion-obsessed brain immediately began spinning as to how I could incorporate Vera's crystal and tulle necklace into my girl-on-the-go wardrobe. I'm picturing a black tee, gray tulip skirt, and the combat boots that never leave my feet to downplay the bridal feel of the necklace. After throwing my hair up into a windswept bun (to show off the bow on the back of the necklace, bien sûr!), I'll feel like I'm jaunting through Soho on my way to afternoon tea...instead of my required business ethics class. Hey, a girl can dream!

What You'll Need:
Tulle ribbon
Beaded applique (found in the bridal section of most sewing stores)
Needle
Thread
Scissors

Sew the applique on a square of tulle fabric (I sewed two ribbons together so it was wide enough). Following the outline of the applique, cut around the the edges leaving approximately 3/4" of fabric. Flip the applique over, and sew the a ribbon on both ends of the applique. I started with extra long ribbon and folded it in half so there would be two strings on both sides of the necklace.

Tie the back of the necklace in a bow around your neck, making sure it hits your collarbone where you desire. Cut off the excess ribbon at the ends of the bows.

Iron Maiden

I've been obsessed with these beat-up studded combat boots from Bess NYC, but I am less than keen on the $320 price tag. I walk by the store on my way to class everyday and stare longingly at the gorgeous (over-priced) studded goods. Left with an abundance of studs from my last project (below), I figured there was no better time than the present to fashion my very own pair. Given the snow storm that left Manhattan a slushy, disgusting mess today, they're sure to keep my feet firmly planted on the slippery sidewalks.

What You'll Need:
Boots (think Target or Goodwill)
Pyramid studs
Seam ripper or other sharp object
Pliers

I have a wee obsession with ankle boots, so I folded the tops of my boots down until I got the height I desired. Next, decide the placement of your studs. I followed the curved seam around the heel. With the prongs of the studs, make a mark on the leather where they will poke through. Use the sharp end of a seam ripper to make little holes where the marks were. Now, the prongs of the studs easily slide into the leather. Using pliers, reach inside the boot and flatten the prongs so they won't poke your feet. Continue until you've studded to your heart's desire!

I love using my boots to toughen up flouncy skirts and feminine frocks!

Stud Muffin

Ever since Riccardo Tisci accented everything from delicate, chiffon tanks to heavy, leather bombers with large gold studs on the runway at Givenchy's Fall '07 show, the fashion world just can't get enough. Not sure if I was ready to dive head first into the stud tank, I decided to test these babies out on an accessory. Seeing as my staple gold and black bag is in the shop (Chanel will refurbish your old bags and send them back looking brand new; downside is that it takes 8-12 weeks), I was in desperate need of a temporary replacement. Not wanting to break the bank on another investment bag (the saleslady at Chanel kindly suggested I pick up a temp bag to hold me over until mine returns, HA!), I figured I was going to have to resort to alternate options.

The Givenchy "Studded Shopper"

What You'll Need:
Black bag
Pyramid studs (assorted sizes)
Seam ripper or other sharp object
Pliers

The fabric on my bag wasn't thick, so I found it easy to poke the prongs through with my hands and bend them closed with pliers. If you can't work the studs through by hand, use the sharp end of the seam ripper to puncture two holes where the prongs will easily slide in. Starting at the center of your bag, work your way toward the outside edge following parallel to the top curve. Next, you will make an upside down triangle. Start from the center stud and make a line of four studs in both direction. In groups of two, work your way down the bag to a point. Now it is time for the larger triangle. Alternating large and small studs, make another line of four studs in both directions above the first triangle. Work your way down the bag in groups of two, just as before, but mix it up by adding a large pyramid in place of two small ones occasionally. Finish the point with a group of three large studs.

The arrowhead-like nature of the triangular pattern makes the bag look much more sophisticated than others with haphazardly placed studs. I think it gives off the perfect undertone of Native-American-meets-modern-New-Yorker. Yes, I'll get along just fine with this until my precious baby returns from the Paris shop looking buffed, shiny, and sparkly.

Acid Trip

Blame it on Kurt Cobain. His soul may be resting in a better place, but his grunge influence is still alive and thriving on the runway. A while back I mentioned Karen Walker's take on the acid wash jean, which took on a western-whimsy vibe styled with a fringe bag and ruffled blouse. It was not until I saw the skinny jeans on the runway at Balmain, however, that I really got the bug to whip up a pair for myself. Christophe Decarnin paired his hipster dungarees with embellished blazers and sky high ornate sandals for a decidedly '09 (not '89) rock chick feel. Now that's Nirvana.

What You'll Need:
Skinny jeans (found at Target)
Household bleach
Plastic gloves
Paper cup
Scissors

First, take your scissors and distress the denim as desired. I cut a hole in the knee as well as a few slashes on the front and back pockets. Pull out the loose threads to give the holes a frayed quality. Next, thoroughly wet your jeans in the bathtub. Wring them out, then lay them flat in the tub. Poor the bleach into a paper cup. Put on the gloves (bleach can burn your skin!) and gently splash small quantities of the bleach all over the jeans. Flip the jeans over and repeat. Wait approximately 5-10 minutes... the longer you wait, the more faded your jeans will look. Turn on the faucet and rinse the bleach out of your jeans. Throw in the washer and tumble dry low!

Just be careful not to overdose (on the bleach)!

No Hassle Tassels

A little bit country, plus one part grunge, add a dash of Parisian sophistication, and you've got what Marc Jacobs equates to "the joy of dressing up" with his Spring 2009 collection. And dress up we will! While many designers took the minimalist approach to reflect the economic downturn, Marc laughed in its face. With models sauntering down the catwalk in tiered skirts, over embellished bags, lurex belts, and armfuls of bangles, Mr. Jacobs definitely took the more is more approach to dressing. No item of his collection screams for attention more than the enormous tassel earrings that dangle dangerously close to the shoulders. And although every business around the world is downsizing, there is no reason your accessories should!

What You'll Need:
Two tassels
Two earring posts
Two head pins
Safety pins (approximately 30)
Jewelry wire
Various color/size beads
Hot glue
Scissors

Start by attaching the earring post to the loop of head pin, which will serve as the base of your earring. String a large bead or stone onto the head pin, then push the pin through the top center of the tassel. Flip the tassel over and put a dot of hot glue on the underside of the head pin. Then slide a bead onto the pin so it sticks to the glue. This bead will be hidden by the fringe, but ensures the tassel will not slip off the post. Snip off any excess length of the pin.

Next, open the safety pins, slide on your decorative beads, then close the pins. Take about 12" of jewelry wire, and begin sliding on the safety pins, alternating with round beads. I added a plain safety pin next to every beaded one to achieve a fuller look like the Marc earrings. When there are enough safety pins to cover the circumference of the tassel, loop the wire through one of the round beads forming a circle.

Slide the circle over the base of the tassel and pull tight.

Twist the two ends of the wire together, snip off the excess, then hide the knot underneath the beads; as they would say in Paris, vous êtes finis!

These ornate tassel earrings will surely lift your spirits - and ensembles - for the remaining months of winter!

Blazin' to Go

Once upon a time, there lived a young girl obsessed with designer clothes. She always did well in school, performed her chores, and cared for her younger brother. Her parents rewarded her with monthly shopping trips to Neiman Marcus, Saks, Barneys, and other department stores. When she began to think she might like to work in fashion for a living, her parents generously allowed her attend college at NYU and spend her summers interning at fashion companies. This girl knew that one day the gravy train would come to an end, as her parents would not support her spending habits forever, and accepting a job in fashion nearly always ends in poverty. Therefore, she learned to fuel her love for fashion by scouring the best thrift and consignment stores around. She was amazed at the finds she'd accumulated over the years (quilted Chanel flap bag at nearly 80% off retail and Christian Louboutin pumps for $40 top the list)! As the young fashionista's style evolved, she came to realize that a designer label alone does not make an item fabulous. One can look just as good in a $5 blazer from Goodwill as in a $500 blazer by Ralph Lauren, as long as it fits well. From that day forward, the young fashionista built her wardrobe around the good quality designer basics she already owned with cheaper trendy items from Zara, H&M, American Apparel, and, yes, even Goodwill. She saved monetarily and lived stylishly ever after.

And so...in keeping with my 2009 resolution, I present five blazers for $5 each. All picked up at my local Goodwill in a matter of 20 minutes.

Black, White, and Red-olutions

If you're like me, you plan weeks ahead for all the productive things you're going to accomplish over holiday breaks. However, that list usually goes out the window in favor of watching tv marathons (24 hours of A Christmas Story on TBS, hecks yes!), catching up on movies/chick lit, and eating Mom's holiday sweets. Another winter vacation tradition that's come to pass over the years is eschewing traditional Christmas morning gifts in favor of post-holiday sales. Always on the hunt for a bargain, I've been searching for the perfect pair of heeled combat boots to pair with girly frocks and tulip skirts for weeks. Santa must have heard my wish because I scored an amazing pair of Kors combat boots on sale at Intermix!

The best part is that they zip up the side, so I won't be scrambling to tie the laces and fasten the buckles when I'm running late for my morning class.

My apologies for being extremely lazy in crafting this vacation, but a new year brings new resolutions. Everyone claims New Yorkers dress in all black, and I've come to realize that I've totally fallen victim to the stereotype. In 2009 one of my goals is to incorporate more color into my daily wardrobe. Now, I know white isn't a color per se, but it's not black. I've fallen more in love with Ann Demeulemeester every season for her classic black and white palate. My second Christmas miracle came in the form of an amazing deal on this Ann Demeulemeester blazer. I just love the black detailing and how the jacket is slightly longer in the front. This piece will be sure to get a lot of wear this coming year.

My other resolution is to be more economical in my spending habits as I'll be an official college grad come May. Since I'll be spending less money at sample sales, I'll just have to get all the more crafty. I'm taking a jewelry making course as part of my studio art minor (gotta love NYU!), so perhaps I'll even share some of my own designs come 2009!

Christmas Corsage

We're all aware that sparkly tanks and short party dresses are essential garments for the holiday party circuit, but what's a girl to accessorize with? If you really want to get into the spirit, take a cue from Dries Van Noten's Spring runway by donning a jingle bell bracelet. Available in gold or silver, this bracelet will integrate seamlessly into your wardrobe. The guests will know the party has really started when the cheery jangle of the bells clicking together announces your arrival!

What You'll Need:
Jingle bells in assorted sizes
Black ribbon, approximately 3 yards
Scissors
Hot glue gun

Start by making the bunch of bells that will sit on the back of your wrist. Slide to the center of the ribbon about 5 of the larger size jingle bells, then tie a knot. This creates the base off which you'll string the rest of the bracelet.

Using a hot glue gun, place a few medium size bells in the bunch for a fuller look. String bells through the ribbon on both sides of the bunch. Work your way from larger bells to smaller, stopping when the length of the bracelet fits around your entire wrist.

Tie the ribbon in a larger bow on the inside of your wrist. For a more dramatic flair, tie an extra piece of long ribbon around the knot.

Beaming Beamon

Vicki Beamon and Karen Erickson are well known for their jewelry line Erickson Beamon, but did you know they made home decor as well? Karen Erickson is single handedly responsible for coining the term "chandelier earring" in the 1980s after her designs, but her passion for chandeliers went one step further.

Behold, the Glam Rock Chandelier.

The antique brass based chandelier is dripping in Japanese glass pearls and Swarovski crystals. The piece has been on display in London's Victoria and Albert Museum for nearly 20 years, and it can be yours for the mere price of $32,500.00! C'mon, everyone needs a designer light fixture to properly see their couture garments underneath. Don't quite have the funds for such an extravagant purchase? Neither did Mama Couturiere. Wanting to spice up an old Williamsburg chandelier in her bathroom, she drew inspiration from this true objet d'art. Now we all know the origin of my creative genes...thanks Mama Couturiere!

What You'll Need:
Lighting fixture
5 strands garland (each 6 ft long)
Scissors

Whether you use a chandelier with mini shades or one lamp, start by cutting the outer fabric off the shade. Leave the inner layer of fabric in tact, and you'll be able to see the wire frame of the shade. For a mini shade, cut your 6 ft strand of Christmas pearl and crystal garland in half. Wrap the garland through the wire lamp frame (to hold in place) in a growth like pattern.

Repeat for all mini shades. If you're decorating a single lamp, you'll want to leave the garland long and wrap it in a spiral around the shade.

The Shredder

When I first stumbled across Raquel Allegra's beautiful shirts I was intrigued by how a basic t-shirt could look like a piece of couture. The fact that Raquel sources her shirts from the LA County Jail adds interesting history and depth to her pieces. Just imagine the story behind that shirt - it was likely worn by a convicted felon while he served kitchen duty, cooking up meals for his fellow inmates! While I'm not brave enough to march into jail and ask for their old, unwanted t-shirts, you can get the same look with a Hanes or Fruit of the Loom undershirt from any supermarket.

What You'll Need:
T-shirt
Seam ripper
Scissors

First, cut the hem off your t-shirt, and style it as desired. You can leave it plain, but I cut a scoop neck and rolled up the sleeves for a more feminine look. Now, decide what section of your t-shirt you want shredded. I found that one side panel (pictured above) or a section of the back usually looks best. Stretch the shirt horizontally between your knees to separate the threads. Take your seam ripper, and pull loose a panel of threads from the bottom of the hem. Using quick, stabbing motions, work your vertically up the shirt, until you have a stripe of loose threads running the entire length of the t-shirt.

I've tried lots of shredding techniques, and found this one works best. Repeat this process for as large a section as you want shredded. After many hours, you'll end up with a one-of-a-kind conversation piece!

Helpful hint: If you're shredding a large section of the shirt, buy one size smaller than normal. The shirt tends to get bigger the more you shred it.

The Hook-Up

Most of the men in my life seem to have an affinity for fishing, so I've inevitably picked up some knowledge on the subject. Though a day spent casting for bass in the hot sun and muddy waters sounds less than ideal, this wraparound bracelet is the perfect accessory to sport to a candle-lit seafood dinner. Follow with a romantic post-dinner harbor cruise, and your date will surely see you're the best catch ever!

What You'll Need:
Brass hook
Leather cord
Scissors

Fold the leather cord in half and tie to one end of the hook. Place knots sporadically down the length of the cord. When the bracelet is long enough to wrap around your wrist several times, finish it off with a double knot. Make sure the knot is loose enough that you can work the hook through it to hold the bracelet on your wrist. Cut off any excess string.

You'll reel in the most stylist stares with this tough, yet luxurious bracelet!

I've heard lots of scary rumors in the past few months regarding the current economic climate. Without a doubt, the most frightening was that bankers at Goldman Sachs hypothesized US currency would become worthless. Can you imagine what would happen to our society if money ceased to exist? Take a cue from Mary-Kate and Ashley by diversifying your portfolio - invest in bullion pieces such as gold and silver, then flaunt your wealth on your sleeve!

Elizabeth and James Bullion Slub

What You'll Need:
X-long white shirt
Earrings or two charms
Jump ring
Needle
Thread

Lay the shirt on a flat surface. Fold the fabric vertically, slightly off center. Sew together the fold with a few small stitches. Attach the two earrings together with the jump ring. If you're using earrings, make sure you take off the hooks! Center the connected charms over the fold, and secure them down to the shirt with a few stitches (tip: place the charms so they will hit about at your hip bone level when the shirt is on).

The Elizabeth and James Bullion Slub can be worn open or closed. Personally, I think the draping is what make the shirt unique, so I plan on always wearing it closed. I stitched my shirt together to hold the fold in place, but you can easily unhook the charms by replacing the jump ring with a jewelry clasp. Instead of sewing the shirt fabric together, just make the fold and sew the charms down.

Haute Wheels: Leading the Way!

If, like me, you grew up with brothers around the house, you likely found yourself tripping over their huge mess of toy soldiers, Transformers, and mini racing cars. I never understood the allure of pushing a toy car with your hand while making annoying car noises. However, thanks to a cute feature in last month's NYLON magazine, I finally found a good use for the multitude of Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars now sitting untouched in basement storage. Swiss designer Jackie Heinsohn takes toy racing cars and turns them into turbocharged accessories (sold at a turbocharged price to match). With a few extra materials, you can turn your brother's toy car into a kitschy cool bracelet for under $10. Shhh, you don't need to tell him what you're doing; he's too busy playing X box to notice one of his prized childhood Hot Wheels is missing...

What You'll Need:
Toy car
Charm
Metal chain (approximately 4.5 inches)
Two jumprings
Two pieces hardware
Jewelry clasp
Superglue
Pliers

First, flip the car on its hood and fix the two pieces of hardware on both ends with superglue. This serves to connect the car to the chain. You can use things such as an earring back or pinback. The key is that the hardware have a flat bottom (to glue to the car) and a hole (to put the jump ring through). Let it dry.

With the assistance of pliers, attach the chain to the car using a jumpring. Attach the charm to the jumpring as well. On the opposite end of the car, attach the chain to the jewelry clasp with a jumpring.

Now you're raring to go!

When Bloggers Collide

You may have noticed that I try to keep knowledge about my personal life to a minimum on this blog. I rarely photograph myself sporting the items I make because I want you to take my examples and inject your own personal style into re-creating them. However, something so fantastically exciting happened Wednesday night that I can't resist sharing! Part of my duties as President for NYU's Fashion Business Association include finding guest speakers from the industry to give lectures to our members. I sent an email to Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist about a month ago, and he agreed to fit a FBA lecture into his schedule between work gigs in Moscow and Rio.

Scott was so nice, down to earth, and sarcastic - just my sense of humor! When asked about how his blog was first received he recalled"People would think ‘Satirist? Is that a comedy website? Maybe he doesn’t know how to spell?’" He graciously stayed well past the Q&A session, speaking individually to every student who waited in line.

With the temperature dropping on a daily basis, I find myself longing for the warm days of spring. Which also means I'm looking through spring collections! Who could forget Erin Fetherston's runway debut in 2007? She sent girls down her New York runway with the idea that they were "a flower sprouting from a sidewalk in an urban environment." Everything from the petal and tulip skirts to the daisy chain headbands evoked a sense of breezy freshness. Just because you're bogged down with winter wear doesn't mean you have to lose that lightness in your step. With a simple color alteration, and you can wear floral accessories all year round!

What You'll Need:
Wire
Fabric flowers
Scissors

Take your wire and mold it into a circle to create the base of the crown. Fold the wire flower stems around the crown , working your way around the entire ring. Sew on other details such as small flowers or tie on raffia ribbon bows for a fuller look.

I recommend dark colors, such as black, navy, or eggplant to stay on trend with the current season. Can't you just picture this black crown with a opaque tights and patent heels for a holiday party? The vibe is so Gothic romance, practically right out of a Brontë novel!

Move over Jackie O., there's a new first lady of fashion in town! Michelle Obama ignited a fashion frenzy all along the campaign trail. She won over the masses with her accessible buys from J. Crew and H&M, while also garnering admiration from the more sartorially apt crowd with her penchant for designers like Narciso Rodriguez and Thakoon. Now that the new Mrs. O is officially our first lady, her style star is only sure to grow brighter. Rumors are swirling over a potential Vogue cover, and designers are clamoring to get their dresses on her for inauguration day. If you missed your shot to pick up the J. Crew cardigan she wore to an interview with Leno (which sold out the next day, natch), worry not! You can easily achieve Mrs. Obama's conservative-yet-chic style with a just a few wardrobe staples found in every girl's closet.

Adventures of Agent Skully

Ever have those moments where you reach into the back of your closet and pull out something you totally forgot you had? It's like finding gold in a pan full of rocks! This morning I found my homemade Alexander McQueen skull scarf buried behind a stack of sweaters. This scarf was seen adorning the neck of every celeb and socialite under thirty circa 2005 (see Sienna, Nicole, and Ashley pictured below). Though some may argue the skull trend is "dead," I always enjoy feeling a little extra hardcore walking the streets of NYC (read: I am not hardcore and need all the help I can get).

What You'll Need:
Large square of chiffon
Pencil
Ruler
Black Sharpie
Skull stencil

First, make your skull stencil on the computer by zooming in on the original scarf. Print off three different images of the skull, all in different sizes. Next, lay your chiffon square flat. Decide the placement of your different size skulls using a ruler. My skulls are about five inches apart. Mark a small dot every spot where a skull should be drawn to make sure the pattern is symmetrical. Next, lay your chiffon over your printed skull image. Trace the skull outline with a pencil. Repeat for as many skulls as you want on your scarf. Lastly, fill in all the skulls with a black sharpie.

Note: In 2005, I was lusting after a McQueen skull scarf so badly that I actually traced the label onto my "impostor." I do not condone this sort of copyright infringement. I've since learned to take a little creative liberty with my designs to make them my own!

Elbaz Puts on the Razzmatazz

Though things this season seem to be graying (the economy and weather, to name two), Lanvin's Spring/Summer 2009 show was a much needed exception. Never one to disappoint, Alber Elbaz lifted the spirits of fashionable women everywhere with another superb collection. Classic colors and simple cuts segued into a shocking finale of electric blue, leopard, and bejeweled accessories. Signs of a bright future on the horizon? Let's hope Spring 2009 turns out to be. Even if it doesn't, these sparkly heels will help boost your optimism.

What You'll Need:
Black heels (found at Old Navy)
Gold paint
Masking tape
Paint brush
Superglue
Assorted crystals

First, paint the heels of the shoes gold. (Hint: use masking tape to section the heel off from the rest of the shoe, so the paint line is even). Allow to dry overnight, depending on the type of paint you use. Next, organize your crystals and decide the design you want. Lanvin's were very haphazardly placed, so that's the look I tried to channel.

Use the superglue to attach the crystals to the shoe heel. Be sure to cover all four sides of your heel if it's squared.

Slip on your heels and they'll put a little extra jazz in your step!

Double your pleasure, double your fun

Awhile back I brought to your attention the double belt trend that took the SS 09 runways by storm. A belted dress or tunic is one of the most common looks these days, so you need to add a little something special to stand out. In what is quite possibly my simplest DIY ever, I'll show you how to get the double belt look in less than two shakes of a lamb's tail!

What You'll Need:
Two belts of identical size
(Yep, that's it!)

It typically looks better if you choose belts of different colors and/or patterns. This will give your look an interesting dynamic when paired with monochrome garments. Connect the buckle of belt #1 to the belt hole of belt #2.

Now you're essentially left with one long belt. Wrap it twice around your waist, and buckle as you would a normal belt.

If (like most fashionistas) you have a flair for the dramatic, you could even repeat the look with three or four belts for a more corseted look!

Tribal Treasure

French interior designer (and baroness!) Rose Anne de Pampelonne's first foray into the fashion world didn't turn out exactly the way she planned. Her line of caftans and tunics were handmade in Nepal, but what did Rose Anne decide to do when the craftsmanship wasn't quite up to her standards? Rip the embroidery off and turn it into jewelry of course! Her embellished pieces, inspired by the foothills of the Himalayas, were right on target with this fall's tribal trend and were received by fashion critics with accolades.

What You'll Need:
1 yard ribbon
3 feathers
Ornate broach or ornament
Hot glue gun
Scissors

First, cut the stems of the feathers down to size. Arrange the feathers in a circular pattern, or however you think they look best paired with your broach or ornament. Next, hot glue the feathers to the back of your ornament.

Tip: Use a toothpick to press the feather stem into the glue to ensure it is secure. Finally, loop your ribbon through the ornament and double knot it at the neck.

This season was all about the exposed zipper; from skinny ankle jeans to bomber jackets, you could find zippers just about anywhere. But why not try showing off the trend in an unconventional way - like on your head! This vintage hat by Pretty Young Thing combines the best of old school charm with a modern twist.

What You'll Need:
Vintage felt hat
1 yard black 1/4" ribbon
One 22" metal black zipper
One 22" metal white zipper
Charm, button, or trinket
Hot glue gun

Start by gluing the thin black ribbon around the circumference of the hat. Next, fold one zipper in half (but make sure the ends are not perfectly even) and make a loop knot. Repeat with the second zipper.

Lay one zipper on top of the other cock-eyed and glue together. Glue the two zippers on the side of the hat. Finally, attach your charm to the zipper pull so it hangs off the side. I used my favorite cell phone charm that I bought from Colette in Paris to add a little sentimental value to the accessory!

We're in the thick of Paris Fashion Week and I've been following style.com religiously (classes be damned!). In my breaks between finance and business leadership I rush to the computer lab to see what new shows have been posted in the 1.15 hours I've been held hostage in the classroom. This garners more than a few stares from my fellow business classmates, who rush to the computer lab to see where the DOW is currently.

Isabel Marant showed her collection, dubbed "A little bit country, a little bit rock n' roll," to the fashion elite in Paris yesterday. I could have lived with out the country bit, but when it came to her chain wrapped slouchy boots...in the words of Rachel Zoe: "I DIE!" Remembering an old pair of Cole Haan boots I had stashed in the back of my closet, I wasted no time fashioning a pair of my very own.

Slouchy boots
Chain
Super glue or double stick tape
Pliers

Fasten the chain to the back of the boot using super glue or a piece of tape (depends if you want to remove the chain later on down the line). Wrap the chain around the boot several times, working upward. When you reach the top, connect the chain together using pliers.

Now you have your very own pair of Isabel Marant boots, months before they become available to the masses! Play up the rocker vibe by pairing them with skinny jeans, or tone down the look with a flirty dress.

Pearl of Wisdom

Well, today marks day one of Paris Fashion Week! What better way to kick things off than with a project inspired by one of France's most famed designers, Jean Paul Gaultier. Though his Fall 2008 RTW collection had some weird animalistic undertones (c'mon, girls were wearing pelts on their heads), his delicate pearl-trimmed velour heels are the perfect thing to wear to a holiday cocktail party.

What You'll Need:
One pair heels
2 long strands faux pearls
fabric glue

Glue one end of a pearl strand on the back, center edge of the shoe. If the pearls are different sizes, make sure the largest pearls are in the front center (where you slide your toes in).

Continue gluing the strand around the shoe until the entire edge is trimmed. Depending on the shape of your shoe, you could play around with an ankle or T-strap too!

Mad for Plaid

Christopher Bailey isn't the only designer staking claim over checks this season. Everyone from Dolce & Gabbana to Karen Walker found inspiration in the English's heavy tartans and love for hunting. Though not everyone can escape to the Balmoral estate for a weekend like Wills and Kate, us fashion elite can take on the urban jungle in a pair of killer heels inspired by Robert Clergerie. The heels are easier to navigate on concrete than Scottish moors anyway!What You'll Need:
1 pair heels (found at Old Navy)
1/2 yard plaid fabric
Tracing paper
Pencil
Hot glue
Scissors

First, you need to make a pattern for the plaid fabric. Take a sheet of tracing paper and wrap it around the heel of your shoe. Crease the paper where the edges overlap. Trace around the top and bottom of the heel with pencil. When you unwrap the paper you should have an outline of the pattern. Cut this out and lay the tracing paper over your plaid fabric. Cut out the plaid fabric according to your pattern.

On the inside of the heel, squeeze a narrow line of hot glue down the center. Press one edge of the plaid on top of the glue. Glue down the rest of the fabric around the shoe until the remaining edge meets back in the inside center of the heel. Trim off any excess fabric.

Out on a Lim

Us style fiends tend to get very opinionated about the merits of the "granny chic" trend. The pieces tend to veer toward the oversize and comfortable, which lead some to call the look frumpy. I say frump-shmump! Thrown over black wool tights and knee-high boots, this 3.1 Phillip Lim inspired cardigan will keep me cozy all winter long.

What You'll Need:
X-long cardigan (found at Old Navy)
5 yards lace trim
Scissors
Needle
Thread

Lay the cardigan on a flat surface. Place the lace on top of the lapel, right side down. Pin in place around the entire sweater, giving a little more leeway at the neck. Sew down the lace along the lapel, using a straight line of tiny stitches.

Next, fold the lace over so the correct side is facing up, and iron flat. Sew the lace down around the scalloped edge to hold in place.

Hey, you gotta admit, when dressing for a morning class, it looks chicer than a pair of sweats.

Zip It

The exposed zipper is one of THE trends for fall. From runways and editorials, the look has now trickled down to high street retailers. I'm a huge fan of the look, but let's just hope it doesn't become as ubiquitous as the dress that won't die. YSL, once again, served as my inspiration for creating this edgy accessory with an unexpected ruffle.
What You'll Need:
Vintage clutch
Hot glue gun
Six 22" zippers

Cut each of the six zippers in half. Make sure the zippers run the front length of the bag, and bend around the corner too. Starting at the bottom of the bag, glue the fabric above the zipper to the bag. Work your way up, row by row, until you reach the top of the bag.

There you have it! Your very own rocker accessory. Too bad there are 12 zippers on the thing, but still nowhere to store the massive amounts of junk I lug around with me!

Leather N' Lace

Prada may have staked its claim over the lace trend for Fall 2008, but we all know fashion is cyclical. Back in the days of Yore (aka 2005), YSL showed delicate, lace bags reminiscent of the Victorian Era.

What You'll Need:
Structured handbag
Battenburg lace (enough to cover bag, 1 yard should be plenty)
Beaded chain for handle
Strips of leather (1 in. wide x 12 in. long)
Pinking shears
Scissors
Glue

Lay lace over the front of your handbag and cut the shape to fit right to the edge of the bag. Glue the lace down around the perimeter of the bag. Take your pinking shears and cut the leather strips on one side so a zig-zag pattern results. Line up the straight edge of the leather strips to the edge of the bag and glue down. The zig zag should face inward, and cover the lace. Attach beaded handle to the bag and swing over your shoulder!

Chain Reaction

Despite all the press surrounding Erin Wasson's questionable jewelry designs, it was the FORM show last Friday that sparked a desire to create my own body chain. I invited friends Connie and Elana over to partake in the jewelry making festivities! As New York fashion week finally winds down, we had time to relax, recap the Spring 2009 trends, and pop open the bottle of champagne from the DKNY show goody bag!

What You'll Need:
Approximately 3 yards thin chain
Pliers

There really is no set formula for making the body chain. I found that trial and error works best. Simply drape and twist the chain around your body in positions you find flattering. Once you're happy with the result, undo the loops on the chain and reconnect them in the desired position. Here are our results:

Next time you find yourself belt shopping you won't have to waste time debating the merits of one style over another. Spring 2009 runways dictate that you can have both!
Marc by Marc Jacobs sent multiple girls down the runway with layered belts (left) and Aurelio Costarella paired two color coordinating belts with his elegant chiffon gowns. The trick to pulling off this look is to make sure you use skinny belts with understated buckles.

Starry Night

As we gear up for the Spring 2009 collections, I thought a trip down memory lane, in the form of Stefano Pilati's Spring 2008 YSL Star Goddess Dress, was appropriate. I know you may be thinking "this is so last season," but anyone who knows me is aware I have a slight obsession with stars. Whether on garments, accessories, or skin, in the words of Depeche Mode, I just can't get enough.

What You'll Need:
White dress (I used a simple jersey, but silk is more akin to the real thing!)
Star template (http://elegantmusings.com/tutorials/startemplate.gif)
Glitter (gold, purple, green, and blue)
Pencil
Fabric glue

Begin by laying the dress on a flat surface. Decide the placement of the stars and trace the outline with a pencil. Next, fill in your star outlines with a smooth coat of fabric glue and shake the glitter on top. Let glue dry for about 20 minutes before shaking off the excess glitter.

Be sure to complete one star before moving onto the next as you don't want the glitter colors to mix. After you have glittered all the stars, allow the dress to dry over night.

The relaxed fit and colorful pattern of the dress make it versatile for styling... you'll have a look that's out of this world!

Stuart Weitzman Jellystone Flats

The debate about wearing jellies past the age of 5 has been going on for quite some time now. Never one to invest in a fleeting trend, I decided to buy a pair of cheapies at my local DSW. If you decide to bite the bullet, why not add a little sophistication with silk ribbon and Swarovski crystals? The only crime to trying this trend is paying $100+ for something that costs under $20.

What You'll Need:

Jelly shoes
Crystals
Silk ribbon
Scissors
Super glue

Start by gluing the crystals onto the shoe where the open weaves cross. I glued a lot onto the front, then started placing them more sporadically as I worked my way back toward the heel. Next, weave the ribbon around the top edge of the shoe from heel to toe (then do the same on the opposite side of the shoe). The two pieces of ribbon will meet in the center of the shoe. Secure in place with super glue and cut off excess ribbon. Glue the ribbon in place at the heel of the shoe in the same manner.

Next, cut about 12 in. of ribbon and tie in a bow. Glue the bow onto the center of the shoe.

Polish of the look by gluing a single crystal in the center of the bow. Et voilà!! Your very own pair of high class jelly flats.

Shake It Up: A Bracelet Necklace?

Didn't you get the memo that wearing a ring on your finger and a bracelet on your wrist is so passé? Mix it up like all the cool kids by wearing ordinary accessories in a completely un-ordinary way.

The good news is you don't have to shell out $800 for Dries Van Noten's runway bijoux. Pile on colorful bangles from Forever 21 to add flair to an otherwise plain outfit, or go for a more tribal look using only metals and bone.

Not quite the exhibitionist? If you don't want to go for such a bold statement, try stringing three cocktail rings onto a piece of ribbon and tie it around two thin bracelets.

Now that, in my opinion, is the perfect touch of irony.

Fringe Benefits

3.1 Phillip Lim Reversible Fringe T-Shirt Dress

Fringe is back with a vengeance! Runways, celebs, and stylistas alike are predicting it to be one of the key trends leading into fall. Don't blow your hard earned summer savings on a limiting statement piece. Ingenuity, careful measuring, and a little elbow grease will go a long way in giving your wallet a big break.

What You'll Need:
Jersey mini dress (I shortened this navy one from American Apparel)
3 yards fringe (I used black, to match Lim's inspiration dress)
Needle
Thread
Ruler
Sharpie

1. Determine the two points on the neckline where it perfectly hits your shoulders (Hint: there is usually a seam connecting the sleeve at this point). Sew the fringe around the neckline in two pieces - one that goes around the front, the other around the back.

2. Next, try the dress on and determine the width of the fringe you want to hang down the front (or back, this dress is reversible!). Make a mark with the Sharpie where you want the fringe to stop on each end. I trust Phillip's design eye, so my fringe stretches across most of my body, with two small strips of exposed dress down the side.
3. Take the dress off, and carefully lay it flat on your table. Be sure the side seams lay exactly straight, as jersey stretches and it is easy to end up with crooked fringe. Following the scooped neckline as a guide, draw a small semi-circle approximately 3.5 inches underneath, between your two width marks. The fringe should cover the semi circle by about 1.5-2 inches when hanging down, as this will be the seam for the next layer of fringe.
4. Lay the fringe on the semi-circle, and cut to the appropriate length. Sew the fringe to the dress along your semi-circle, securing the mid and end points first to avoid a lopsided semi-circle.

5. Repeat steps 3-4 for as many more layers of fringe you want. Three to four layers below the neckline is usually plenty, as you want the fringe to hang just above the hemline.

Now it's time to slip on your dress and celebrate your savings by shimmying to the Charleston all night long!

Dye Job #2: Prada S/S 04

I'm not trying to fool anyone and claim that an item of clothing from 2004 can be called "vintage," but something about Prada's 2004 spring collection makes my heart skip a beat. It represents the time in my life when I was just discovering fashion. I distinctly remeber seeing a photo of Madonna wearing the dip-dye cardigan and thinking "I could make that...!" Unfortunately, Carbon Couturier's first DIY didn't end up so well; I had more red dye on my hands than the sweater! Ever since that ill-fated project I take notice when I see degradé items. So imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this Prada skirt at San Francisco thrift store Wasteland last week!

The best part: it was $28. Yes, $28 for Prada! The worst part: it was 2 sizes too small. Being too good a bargain to pass up, I insisted that my petite friend buy it instead.

Upon re-evaluation, I've concluded dip dying can't be that difficult. You can revitalize virtually any piece of clothing and the trend has withstood the test of time. Just last season Lacroix incorporated the look into his collection with ombre leggings. Now the question is, what random items of white clothing do you have lying around?

Dye-ing to try...

Karen Walker acid wash jeans.

Upon first glance I thought these pants were the most heinous article of clothing I ever laid eyes on! I mean, who would pay $385 to look like they performed menial labor for a living? However, something about the ease in which Lauren Santo Domingo pulls off the look (in the background of a recent Sartorialist post no less) inspired me to try it out. It's a cheap, simple project; all you need is to splatter some bleach on an old pair of dark jeans. Pair them with a billowing blouse (à la Lauren) for a summertime chic vibe or throw on a bouclé sweater at the first sign of an autumn breeze.

YSL Paint Splatter Skirt

Eeek! Sorry, sorry for my lack of updates!! Moving apartments, decorating, and getting settled in my summer job has left very little time for fashion projects. However, the resort shows are over and couture season is officially underway, so I'm sure I'll find lots of inspiration and I hope you will too! Just perusing style.com's "detail" shots of the shows gives me tons of ideas. I've been meaning to paint splatter a white skirt for some time to achieve this YSL look:

With the long weekend kicking off tomorrow I'll finally have time to give it a go! Not to mention that I have bunches of extra paint lying around my apartment from stenciling chairs (as part of decorating my new digs). Stay tuned for the results...

Gara Danielle Rope Bracelet

When New York turned LA girl Gara started selling her jewelry right off her own neck, she decided to create her own line called Gara Danielle. Using her signature wire wrapping technique, Gara's pieces are precious and delicate with just a bit of hard edge thrown into the mix. Luckily her braiding techniques are not too complex, so anyone with experience making friendship bracelets as a child (come on, we all went through the lanyard phase!) can pull off this project.

What You'll Need:
Chain
Cord (substitute ribbon, suede, floss, or any other thread to add interesting texture)
Scissors
Charm (optional)

Cut one piece of chain and two pieces of cord to the same length. The length should be however many times you want the bracelet to wrap around your wrist, plus a few inches extra because the bracelet shortens as you braid it. Knot one end and begin braiding. Work your way down until about three inches remain loose and knot again to secure braid. Attach a special charm at the end for personal flair!

To wear simply wrap the bracelet around your wrist and tie the two knots together, leaving some fringe. If you want a more secure clasp (which you can buy at any craft store), simply attach it to the knot.

Louis Vuitton Brocade Booties

This pair of Louis Vuitton booties goes all the way back to Fall 2004. They may not be in style anymore, but this was one of my more extravagant projects that I wanted to feature.

What You'll Need:
Fur
Ribbon
Gold paint
Sharpie
White booties

I found a pair of ghetto-esque booties at Payless (think Timberlands with heels) for $15. Cut the top off to make them ankle length. Paint them gold, then add detail with a Sharpie marker. Hot glue fur trim around the top of the boot by folding it over the both sidea. Thread a silk ribbon through the lace holes and you're done!

Marc Jacobs styled them with red and forest green plaid coats if you want to channel the entire look.

Judith Leiber Clutch

A Judith Leiber swarovski crystal studded bag is a classic investment for every fashionista. However, at over $1,000 a pop they're not exactly on the affordable side. With some crystals, glue, and a little elbow grease no one will be able to the difference between your bag, and the poor sap who forked over a month's rent standing next to you!

What You'll Need:
Vintage clutch
Packing tape
Super glue
Crystals

Find a hard, vintage clutch in your mother's closet or at an antique store. For curved bags, it is best to put packing tape over the front so the crystals lay as smooth as possible. Beginning at the top, left corner start gluing crystals across the top row. Repeat until the entire front is complete!

For the budding artistes out there, you can draw your own design on the bag and accentuate it with different color crystals. Voila, a one of a kind piece!

*Note, this could take some time, depending on the crystal size you use. It is best to attempt this project in the summer!

CC Skye Wrap Bracelet

Legend has it that CC Skye's famous wrap bracelets were actually inspired by Nicole Richie. Nic apparently took the chain strap off her Chanel bag and fashioned it into a bracelet. Now CC Skye's jewelry is worn by everyone from Hilary Duff to...you!

What You'll Need:
Chain
Ribbon
Scissors

Select chain from your local hardware store, and ask a professional to cut it to your desired length (however many times you want the bracelet to wrap around your wrist). Select ribbon, leather, or any other string of appropriate width to thread through the chain. Tie the ends to hold in place. Either leave long and tie a bow, or snip short for a sleek look.

Tip: I prefer leaving the ribbon ends long so I can change the color to match my outfit. You can make infinite bracelets out of one chain that way!

Geminola Painted Ballet Flats

Ballet flats are no longer a novelty shoe: they are a necessity. No wardrobe is complete without a pair, or two, or seven, but with everyone wearing flats, how can you standout? Geminola, beloved for their creative refurbishes of vintage items, offers an answer with these painted ballet flats.

What You'll Need:
Ballet flats
Stencil (provided)
Tracing paper
Pencil
Paint

Blow up the pattern provided to the necessary size (so it fits on the toe of your ballet shoe). Choose your favorite design and trace onto the tracing paper. Flip the tracing the paper over (so the pencil-side touches the shoe) and center it on the shoe. Make sure the end of your pencil is blunt, and shade over the entire back of the tracing paper, making sure you apply ample pressure. This allows your traced design to transfer onto the shoe. When you peel the paper off, you should have a nice pattern ready to paint. Choose your favorite song lyric and write it in the box!
